A gel set that lifts after eight days is frustrating, and the usual assumption is that something went wrong during the appointment. Sometimes it did. More often the set was fine and the first week at home undid it.
Here is what actually shortens a gel manicure, in roughly the order it matters.
Water in the first 24 hours
Gel is cured before you leave, so it is not drying at home in the way traditional polish does. But the nail plate underneath still expands and contracts with water, and a long hot shower or a sink full of washing up on the first evening is the most common early cause of lifting at the cuticle.
You do not need to avoid water. Just avoid soaking, and dry your hands properly rather than leaving them damp.
Using your nails as tools
This is the big one and nobody wants to hear it. Opening cans, scraping labels, prying lids and picking at packaging all apply force straight to the free edge, which is exactly where lifting starts.
The fix is not to be careful forever. It is to use the side of a finger or a proper tool for the three or four things you do most often.
Skipping cuticle oil
Oil is the single highest-return habit and the one most people drop after a few days. It keeps the skin around the nail flexible, which reduces the tearing and lifting at the base that starts most early failures.
Once a day is enough. Before bed is easiest because you are not about to wash it off.
Heat
Ovens, hair dryers on a hot setting and long spells in strong sun all soften gel slightly. On its own this rarely ruins a set, but combined with pressure it is enough to start an edge lifting.
Harsh cleaning products
Bleach, oven cleaner and strong solvents will dull a gel top coat and can affect the colour. Gloves are the whole solution here and they cost almost nothing.
Picking at a lift
When a corner does start to lift, the instinct is to pull it. Do not. Peeling a gel set off takes layers of your natural nail with it, and that damage is what people are usually trying to fix when they come in asking for something stronger.
If something lifts, message us. Gel services here carry a 7-day warranty, and it is far easier for everyone if it is dealt with properly. Removal, if it is needed, is $15 for soft gel and $25 for hard gel, which is considerably cheaper than repairing a damaged nail plate over several months.

A realistic timeline
Two to three weeks is a normal run for a well-prepped gel manicure on healthy nails. Past that, the limit is usually not the gel but the regrowth gap at the cuticle, which starts to look obvious before the colour actually fails.
